8 French peacekeepers killed in the Ivory Coast - UN threatens "serious consequences"

A google search did the trick: 2REP = 2eme Régiment Etranger de Parachutistes. If you don't read French, I guess in English it would be called something like "2nd Paratroop Ranger Regiment".
Etranger means foreign in French, not ranger. I guess (without looking it up now) 2REP is a part of the FFL.

Exactly how many times did Iraq fire upon our planes?
Dozens reported, likely hundreds more.

civil war between ruler and ethnic minority. But the ruler isnt quite strong enough to win, and the minority isnt Kurds, and its the jewel of the French neocolonial empire, so the UN authorizes French intervention as peacekeepers, between the opposing forces. Ivorian planes kill some French troops Either A. because some guys in the Ivorian military think the French are supporting their enemies or B. By mistake. Without taking time to see what the truth is the French escalate by destroying the Ivorian air force. This sort of outrages those Ivorians who support their legitimate soveriegn govt. And they start doing nasty things to French civilians in IC. French then take over the capital, and abidjan, and surround the house of the President.
Last i heard the President of IC has asked France to withdraw armor from the capital. Think they'll do that? Or will the UNSC authorize regime change?

sounds a lot like a place i've heard of in the middle east...
It'll be much easier for the French. The hardest part of counterinsurgency is intell. The French have been in IC more or less continuosly since independence. I presume IC society is filled with agents of French intell. Starting up an effective anti-French insurgency under those circumstances would be very difficult.
BTW Who will count the dead?
"French troops killed more than 30 Ivory Coast nationals and wounded at least 100 others in the ongoing crisis in the west African country, Ivorian parliament speaker Mamadou Coulibaly said on French public radio France Inter Sunday. "In [the main cities of] Abidjan and Yamassoukro the French army killed more than 30 people and wounded more than 100, people who were unarmed, to avenge the blood of nine dead French soldiers," Coulibaly said."

Regarding the reason why the Ivorian airforce bombed the French, I think it's C: because Gbagbo believed he could scare the French out of Ivory Coast with a tad of action and angry mobs.
In all cases, the south widely believes that we actively support the northern Rebels. I don't know how it is now, but two years ago, the rebels also believed we supported the loyalists
As per our counterintelligence: We have more than spies, we have corrupted contacts. Corruption is an accepted way to distribute wealth in Africa, and the French shadow diplomacy uses its tool very much. Besides, there is a web of personal relationships that have been woven by our "Misters Africa". The historical "Mister Africa" (who was in this position since the independences in 1960) is dead a few years ago, which was a stepback for our shadow diplomacy. But still, our contact list there is certainly extensive.

It worked in Rwanda. 10 Belgian soldiers killed and tortured and all we did was evacuate our people, leaving the rebels to their ethnic cleansing.
I just hope the UN stays in and even increases its presence.
