    • Yes, and Sherman and his whole army infiltrated Atlanta in civilian clothes, yes?

Um no. The army was dressed in military garb when they entered Atlanta.

The atomic bombs would have had about the same effect on the Japanese population. That being zero.

It's funny that they surrendered after the second one .

To the extent that this created widespread despair and weakened southern resolve to fight, by no means.

Actually there is some evidence that Sherman's March to the Sea was the straw that broke the camel's back. It was that which showed the South that it was over.

Hiroshima, Nagasaki, we in America would like to think this was THE defining event that forced Japan to surrender. However it is also just as likely that the declaration of war and rapid advances made by the Soviets in the China theatre let the emporer know the gig was up. I think it more likely the combination of the two. But in of itself ineffective without boots on the ground threats.

I don't think so. I believe the bombs themselves where what did it. They realized they couldn't go up against a super-weapon like that anymore.

We going to have to agree to disagree. Were it not for the fact that the confederacy was already demoralized from conventional losses in battle and in territorial holding, this tactic would merely have enraged the south. The confederacy was on its last legs and teh rebels were determined to see it through as long as a viable armed contingency could be fielded. Shermans march merely made the ability to field a viable army that much more unlikely.

Again the point was only in Japans death throws could this even be considered to be a viable tactic (and I'm not so convinced that it was the threat of the uber weapons as much as the knowing that the Ruskies were kicking their a$$ in China) But for arguement sake lets say it was the threat of complete anhialation via uber weapons of destruction coupled with the inevitable understanding they had no means to win.

There is a clear dif between the expectation that these tactics are effective against an Civilians of the enemy with no hope of winning as compared to Pals vs. Israel (who is not in any way cowed by these actions)

This is where the fight really began for a lot of us.

Arafat is dead (cause still unknown), the widow is sad, the money is lost, Pals will kill each other for awhile, the story saga of the ME rolls on.....

            We've covered it.

They didn't drop him during that orgy of gunfire at the funeral did they?

Usually, we let the person that topped it decide when to untop it... This time, I agree with you, and decided to make the decision myself

                                Glad to have helped.
