By "cowboy" I meant right wing conservative tough love types. And you don't try telling me that Stampede time is the only time you see cowboy boots - 'cause I've been to Calgary enough to know that's not true.

I honestly see more cowboy hats/boots here in Markham than in Calgary.

But maybe that's just because Markham, ON and Austin, TX both work on the same products for IBM, so we've got some Texans up here.

Ok I can accept that. I was thinking a rural or country setting and to me Calgary does not have that feels at all.

Some boots but not a whole bunch and hardly ANY cowboy hats (outside the Stampede time and the cowboy bars).

My sympathies, . Well maybe you like it there but for some reason I just don't. I like Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa , Montreal, Halifax and St. John's. I don't really like Toronto or Edmonton ( although in fairness I haven't been to Edmonton often-- I don't think you could convince me to bother with the 3 hour drive again). I'm pretty ambivalent about Winnipeg , Charlottetown and Moncton.

          • Toronto is highly overrated.

Traffic is a mess, pollution is insane, scenery is so bland, the city is overcrowded, and the suburbs are lifeless.

            • I never said Toronto was for me - that's just where I am.

My wife's in advertising, so to gain experience in national accounts, she had to work in TO. I can work anywhere, so that's why we're here.

Not that I hate it though...the scenery isn't so bland, as you say, in the fall - you don't get fall colours like here out west. And it is the arguably the most multi-cultural city in the world - which I like because I'll eat pretty much anything.

Seems I like the same cities as you, Flubber, but I haven't spent any time in the maritimes.

              • Toronto is a hole, but it so utterly and completely dominates the Canadian economy that it's hard not to feel the pull towards it at some time or another. I'm from Vancouver and would move back there in a heartbeat, but the reality is that Toronto is where the corporate jobs are, especially in finance.

                • Calgary competes very well for corporate jobs.

It's second only to Toronto in terms of corporate HQ counts in Canada, and it's the 5th(?) largest city in terms of population. That's a good ratio.

                          • What would be 4th? I can think of only Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver that would be higher than Calgary.

I prefer smaller cities myself, Calgary was too busy when I lived there and it's only gotten worse in the last 6 years. It is pretty though, and I remember having lots of time to spend looking at the mountains while waiting in traffic

For a while yet. It has a lead on Calgary and I understand it is growing pretty well in its own right (probably from all those bloated Liveral government programs )
