      This could be a big selling point for a lot of people, but me, I don't like the sound created by a lot of these things. I have no desire to hear music as if it was being played a garage.

      And I like the cricks and hiss on my LPs. It gives it warmth that you can't get from cold digital musi

      He was offered a rebate if he mailed in a form within 30 days. If he was going away then he should have mailed it before he left.

      If the bit about 30 days was buried in extremely fine print then that would be a different story, but from what you told us, he's only got himself to blame. Actually I would also ***** at the retailer for not making it crystal clear that the rebate had to be sent in within 30 days.

        This could be an old issue. The ipod loaner they gave me is an older model and it doesn't work as a portable HD, but the new model that I had did work.

          Yes, that not getting the rebate forms within 30 days is the friend's fault, not the companies. I know plenty of companies that will not accept rebates that come in late.

          Anyway, I guess the silence mean that I can't test out a Zen Touch in a store somewhere out there. That's a shame, because I have gotten to try out an iPod 4G and liked the set up. Like to compare it.

            The retailer is Apple.com, and he bought it directly from them and didn't know about the 30-day policy.

            He bought it while he was in Germany for the summer as an exchange student, and it was mailed to his house in Seattle for when he came back.

            It was then when looking through all of the documentation and receipts they sent him that he discovered the 30-day policy.

            He called and begged and pleaded and they wouldn't budge.

            Real customer service is bending over backwards to help the customer. That's how you do it. This guy is a recent PC->Mac convert, and he was obsessed and infatuated with Apple (to the point of getting a job at the Apple store), and now he f*cking hates them.

            Where I work, if a customer has a serious problem and it's 3am -- not only does someone answer the phone for them, we'll wake up a developer or team of developers to work on it ASAP. That's customer service, and that's how you retain customers.

            Retaining customers is something Apple should look into, given their shrinking marketshare.

              How would we know any stores near you that have demo units out? Come on.

                Honest question: How does one increase the volume on an iPod 4G?

                  Imran, you live in Metro Atlanta/Decatur...

                  I know for a fact that there are plenty of Best Buys and Circuit Cities in the area...

                    Best Buys have it? That's ALL I wanted to know!

                    I went to a Circuit City this weekend, but they didn't have a Zen Touch to try.

                    Honest question: How does one increase the volume on an iPod 4G?

                    While the song is playing you can circle forward or backwards to increase or decrease the volume.

                      How do you skip to the next track, or start the song over again? How do you pause/stop?

                        It's a click wheel... you click on the left for starting the song again (twice, I presume to go back a track), you click the right for skipping to the next track, and click down to pause.

                        I believe that's right.

                          Then how would you access the menu?

                            The Menu is on top of the click wheel... if you click it it goes back to the immediate menu and clicking it again goes to a higher menu, all the way to the top.

                              So where's the play button?

                              Top --> Menu
                              Left --> Back
                              Right --> Forward
                              Down --> Stop

                              ??? --> Play

                                It's a wheel, so there is a button in the middle. That's your 'Ok' and your 'Play'.

                                Oh, and the down is Pause. There really isn't a Stop, per se. So you can hit the Pause again to start it playing again.
