  • I couldn't tolerate US advertising levels on TV all our channels, it's bad enough what we get on our commercial TV now.

And the money does go to maintaining the broadcast network which all the free to air channels share.

The licence fee is negligible compared to what I pay for sky sports and movies anyway.

    • Imran, I have DirectTV. I don't pay a single dime for PBS.

You don't have any fees on your bill?

The Advert Channel, a free-to-air 24 hour TV channel dedicated entirely to commercials, has launched on Sky channel 694. The Channel features a reange of classic commercials from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s plus the best of today's ads. Its schedule also includes live studio discussions about advertising, plus behind-the-scenes documentaries on how adverts are produced.

It depends on when it started, Ned. If they'd introduced it at the begining, then no one would care, it's just aprt of the cost of owning a TV. Today, of course, people would ***** up a storm, and then pay it cuz they're all tv addicts. I'd just listen to Bunnyrgrrl complain as I sold the tvs.

Gibsie - cheers for the hooray, I'll have another drink to that. As for the propaganda bit, I may have exaggerated , but I still maintain that millions of letters are despatched by the BBC terror-department each year that threaten dire things if you don't have a licence. This must be costly. Plus all the ads on all (I think) five channels that do the same, and surly they are expensive too.
It is a nice story about you saying there are only two spy-vans about and they are useless. If true (I don't know), then the terror is all huff and bluff!
It is true I am somewhat 'paranoid' (not necessarily in the technical sense - but I know what you mean). Can't fault you on that.

Mike H - Thanks for the corrections. It used to be ten percent off for the blind. I presume when they made it free for tho over 75's, they reduced the blind discount too. It is still ridiculous and typical of the cynicism of the British National Socialist Party (ooh, arn't I the cynic?). The correction about seperate payments in properties depending on whether they are seperate residences is still a power-monger's dream.
You are false when you say there are no adverts on the BBC. Between programmes, they advertise themselves to a highly irritating degree. Within many programmes they also advertise many things and this is a sort of corruption.
Sure the ads on the other channels are in the main horrible and crap. I imagine that if I was in the US I would be even more irritated by this, and my flipper would have died by now.

The Ceebs - I am an arch-whinger and whiner no matter what. Yet there is a matter of principle here, especially when I think (in my paranoia) that the BBC is an extension of state control and more or less a wing of the Labour party.

Frustrated Poet - what does AE mean?
