It made it away from the docks (without the aid of tugs, which was thought to be impossible) and headed for the harbor entrance. The Nevada then came under heavy attack from the Japanese. Realizing that if it sunk in the harbor mouth, it would seal up Pearl Harbor, the captain turned the ship to starboard and it sunk near what is now known as Nevada Point.

I always thought ancient weapons would make a good series of names for ships (athough it works better with British ships):

    HMS Chariot
    HMS Crossbow
    HMS Catapault
    HMS Javelin
    HMS Broadsword
    HMS Iron Lance
    HMS Warhammer
    HMS Rapier
    HMS Greekfire
    HMS Battle Axe

If you really want to screw with people's minds, use the names of modern weapons instead.

Civilian: What's the name of that ship?
            Sailor: Oh, that's the Submarine.
Civilian: No, I mean the aircraft carrier over there.
            Sailor: You mean Submarine
Civilian: Looks like an aircraft carrier to me.
            Sailor: It is.
Civilian: But you just said was a Submarine.
            Sailor: It is
Civilian Argh, forget about it. What about that smaller ship beside it?
            Sailor: You mean the Tank?
Civilian: I'm not talking about any tank, I'm talking about that ship that looks like a destroyer.
Sailor: Destroyer? You'd have to ask the air force about that. We don't fly Destroyers in the navy.

              Screwing up people's minds

Or, to celebrate our (that's "our" as in "your") diversity, one could name them after minorities:

              USS Black
              USS Hispanic
              USS Mormon
              USS Native Indian
              USS Redneck
              USS Paedophile
              USS Geek
              USS Sane Person
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I suspect Shinano was the largest at the time but that the newer carriers beat them.

                    Good list

Ken Macleod also has a knack for naming ships. I'm partial to the Necessary Evil But Still Cool from the Cassini Division.

                              • Shinano

"Shinano was therefore the largest aircraft carrier ever built, and she retained that distinction until the commissioning of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise in 1961.""

Come to think of it, Why the H**l do they remember warships after politicians? Politicians shouldn't have anything to do with war. It only results in "unnecessary" bloodlost.
