A little more detail on what I'm talking about:

The code entry form is compsoed of five boxes with room for five characters apiece, and I'm supposed to enter the code ignoring any hyphens; in addition, the background of the form shows a picture of the certificate, with "Code #: IIIII-IIIII-IIIII-IIIII-IIIII" clearly shown.

MY certificate has "Product ID: xxxxx-OEM-xxxxxx-xxxxx" (no I'm NOT going to post the actual digits, natch).

The certificate has the strip and the embossing; the computer is an NEC and was purchased new (five years ago), with all the packaging in place and the software envelope sealed.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Lately, Counterglow has been going down more often then a $2 hooker.

$2 is expensive in some countries.

                    98 is asking you for a 5x5?

98 didn't have a 5x5 code, AFAIK. Actually it did, but it was buried and not asked for from the end user. It should ask you for the string that you have. xxx-oem-xxxxxxx.

The other odd thing is that NEC didn't use the x-OEM-x codes, that I can recall.

That sounds like an oem windows license on a brand machine. Did you buy it new from the store?

Yeah, it was a major local electronics chain; I forget the name -- on the level of Best Buy, only locally based.

Did you get a white book about W98 with the label stuck on it on celophane?

How about Packard Bell? I have found clues, on occasion, that it was branded NEC, but built by Packard Bell.

                            I don't recall.

I'll have to look when I get home.

I think the manuals were all on disk -- the restore disk said it installed them, but needless to say I was unable to look.

NEC bought Packard Bell, and there were many a strange thing that happened after that consumation.

Let me know about the packaging of the CD that you got. Especially about where that label with the x-OEM-x is.
