  • 6 US Troops charged for maltreating Iraqi jail inmates

I saw the photos on the news tonight - they are pretty shocking.

    AAP

US television network CBS broadcast images of American troops mistreating Iraqi prisoners, saying an army investigation had found "systemwide" problems in the handling of captured Iraqis.

Six US soldiers are being court-martialed on charges stemming from the investigation into abuse of prisoners at Abu Gharaib, said General Mark Kimmitt, deputy chief of military operations in Iraq.

Abu Gharaib is infamous as a prison where former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's regime tortured and executed opponents.

Photographs aired by the network on 60 Minutes II included one showing a prisoner standing on a box with a hood over his head and wires coming from his hands. The network said he was told he would be electrocuted if he fell off.

Other pictures showed nude prisoners lying on each other and simulating oral sex as US troops pointed and laughed.

"We're appalled... these are our fellow soldiers, these are the people we work with every day, they represent us, they wear the same uniform as us, and they let their fellow soldiers down," Kimmitt told CBS in an interview from Baghdad.

"We expect our soldiers to be treated well by the adversary, by the enemy... and if we can't hold ourselves up as an example of how to treat people with dignity and respect, we can't ask that other nations do that to our soldiers."

Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Chip Frederick has been charged with maltreatment, assault and indecent acts for posing for a photograph while sitting on top of a detainee, striking detainees and ordering detainees to strike each other, among other things, CBS said.

Frederick, a prison guard from Virginia in civilian life, and his lawyer, Gary Myers, blamed the problems at the prison on the atmosphere created by commanders.

"We had no support, no training whatsoever," he told CBS.

Indeed, the army investigation found a lack of leadership at the prison and concluded soldiers at the prison, most of whom were reservists, were not trained on rules for handling prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention.

This could be an isolated lapse or it could be a sign things are really falling apart over there. I note General Kimmet said there were system wide problems. That's not good.

According to Swedish radio news, a high-ranking American officer (can't remember what grade) resigned today due to this.

Things like this is bound to happen in a large organisation that's working under a lot of pressure. At least the commanders seems to be doing something about it. As long as the forces take responsibility and take actions against soldiers and units that don't behave, things are probably as good as is to be expected during a situation like this.

Ya the brigadier in charge is being court marshalled.

But the attitude of those guards was chilling. They appear in the photos, laughing and smiling.

They claimed they had been told to "soften up" the prisoners for interrogations. They did this by humiliation and it appears played out some of their sexual fantasies in the process.

It is generally upsetting to see how people, whether the products of an "enlightened" society or not - can descend into barbarity so easily.

I listened to those "average Joe" interviews that the news media does with average Iraqis. In their minds, the US got rid of a germ in Saddam, but now, the Americans are occupying their country. Same ****, different oppressor.

There are bound to be half a hundred attitudes towards Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

As he brought them 8 profitless years of war with Iran, his invasion of Kuwait was likewise a failure and, in the end, he brought down upon them an invasion by the US and UK I don't imagine there are too many who think he was wonderful.

Those he directly oppressed may even be glad of the invasion but I suspect there would be few indeed that would go that far.

Foreign invasion is just not something people like.

If they did mistreat the prisoners the six who have been arrested should be ashamed of themselves. I saw a really lame thing in the Times where the NCO was moaning that no one had told him how to act. He also said he had not seen the Geneva convention before.

No one needs to be told not to behave as these men are said to have. Well, not much after the age of seven anyway. You certainly don't need the Geneva Convention to tell you.

Let's hope that's the worst real case of such stuff. We will not escape a ton of propaganda assertions.

Those soldiers need to be dishonorably discharged and tried for criminal misconduct.

I'll enlighten those who don't already know it that you're one.

Enemy combatants who are actively resisting us are *******s, and get exactly what they deserve, but lawful combatant prisoners in our custody deserve treatment in strict compliace with the Geneva Convention and other applicable treaties and standards of treatment. Unlawful combatant prisoners deserve the minimum standard of treatment required under applicable law until their cases are disposed of according to the UCMJ.

Those guards, if proven guilty, should receive the maximum sentences for each offence convicted, and any senior NCO's and officers above them responsible for conditions at that facility should also be severely punished.

I didn't attribute bull**** comments to you in anticipation of some knee-jerk assumption of what you'd say.

I let your comments speak for themselves.
