Well, there are several reasons why Stuyvesant does so well (as a school). First, there's a specialized test to get in, which means you've got generally smart people who either want to learn or have parents pushing their kids to do so, which means that the students/classmates were interested in learning, which makes some of the teachers more engaging. There are lots of electives and advanced placement classes, meaning most students have opportunities to study things that interest them. And parents were very involved (in the parent association).
And yes, I'm another nerd who graduated from Stuy.
