  • Education in Iraq -- the key to a new democracy?

Earlier this evening, I was watching the usual Lou Dobbs report and tonight, he discussed how education in Iraq was already making progress.

But what was not brought up (and I vouch that it wasn't brought up by any media segment on this topic), is that to what extent will Iraqi children be indoctrinated with blatant, unquestioning, pro-US propaganda and ideology by Iraqi teachers?

For instance -- will Iraqi children learn in their history classes how the United States used to be buddies with Saddam?

Interesting that the media did not bring this question up.

The United States was founded by means of rebellion against the British Empire. Today, the US and England are the best of allies.

Time passes. Allies and enemies change.

Well, the future of the Iraqi education process will be in the hands of the coming Iraqi ministry of education. The occupying authority will have about 1 year of schooling under its control- then we will see what new curriculum gets cooked up, and what happens with schools and Islam.

I thought your questions were a little ham-handed.

Since you mentioned Islam itself, GePap -- I wonder how much their education will be based on Western approaches/ideology.

Well, the question is what sort of recognition Islam will get in the constitution-will Iraq delcare itself an Islamic state? (not in that clerics will rule, but that the state will recognize islam as the religion of Iraq) If it does, some level of Islamic insturction is likely, though who knows how orthodox.

What where the schools like before? Iraq was a fairly modern country and not fundementalist. Was there much propaganda or censorship, or was it was it pretty good (despite how underfunded I imagine it could've been)?
