  • What's the US Govt's problem with Syria?

I keep reading this stuff about "is Syria next?" and the natural question is what does the US Govt have against them. They don't have nukes, they haven't been invading other countries, they aren't even in the "Axis of Evil", in fact I never hear anything about this country.

Syria is a Baathist regime, albeit infinitely less horrendous than Iraq's. Unlike Saudi Arabia, it has no real leverage and cannot block the oil markets in case of an invasion. It is also quite weak, and could be a suited country in the neoconservative dream of forcing the Middle East to become "democratic" and west-friendly.

They support terrorism, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah.

Well, they do have oil but not very much. Their production is a little more than 1/10 of Iran's for example.

It's believed they provide support for a number of terror organizations, and of course there is the added negative of them being next to and generally hostile towards Israel.

I highly doubt that Bush has any plans to attack Syria. All this "syria next?" talk is mostly media speculation or wishful thinking.

Just another country that threat American interests in the middle east, nothing new.

Syria may also be the source of many of the foreign terrorists currently in Iraq; that country opened its borders to people wishing to fight during Gulf War II.

There is a lot of talk of the Syrians burying Saddam's WMD for him.
