Its kinda like the medieval battle recreations except with LARP they use nerf swords (and whats the point of that).
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

No more nerdy, or strange, than hanging around a turn-based strategy community, and playing the games, to the exclusion of normal relationships. OK, geeky vs. nerdy. By the way, there are a fair number of hot babes in many larps. Strange hot babes, but still hot babes. If you ignore the stricture, "Never go to bed with anybody crazier than you are," they can be quite, umm, enlightening.

With my friends, we had a few LARPs, but were all amateurs. Those involved almost no fighting, and were almost only based on interactions between characters for a whole evening (i.e. we played our role without interruption, except when talking to the gamemasters).

We had great fun, as we all had an excuse to set up plots, assassination attempts, and diplomacy tricks

OK, I'll bite. Is there any other kind (than an amateur larper). I shudder to think of what a professional is like. Maybe reality TV?

              OK - SocietyforCreativeAnachonisms (semi-professional)
              - Civil War reenactment - professional
              - Napoleanic reenactors - professional

However, some of the Civil War guys are positively anal about it. Haven't been to Europe, so I don't know about the Napolenaic types.
