  • US Democrat Ad Critique

-first, and my usual criticism of all political ads, their too negative. Yes, we all know how bad Bush is, but what are YOU going to do different? These ads could be for any candidate, they don't actually say what if anything they'd do.

-Preaching to the choir: No moderate conservative (with a job and some money) is going to be able to resist rolling their eyes at treacle like 'Child's Play'....c'mon anything so stereotypically Democrat as pictures of kids working in factories with FOLK MUSIC in the background?? And not saying what they'd do to prevent this non-impending problem?

-The 'bushometer' ad: Pretty good...but BANKRUPT the USA? Sounds like hyperbole. Bush still has a lot of work to do if he wants to do something that could be described as 'bankrupting America'.

-Polygraph: Effective way of pointing out your oppostions lies with something we're all familiar with from TV dramas BUT...why the single-minded focus on Iraq?? Big mistake...although it should be mentioned, Iraq is not an election-winning issue for Democrats.

    Fill in your own!

And to head of 'why do you care' of course I do because the policies of the friends of the **** Cheney/Bush admin directly affect Canada.

Negative ads work, that's why we still use it after 200 years. Look at the damage it did to Gore in 2000, where he was tarred with the liar image, even though he was mostly telling the truth, while Shrub lied his socks off and no one called him on it.

Good God, Seeker! When you've got the likes of Al Franken & Michael Moore judging such a contest, what do you expect?

On the other hand, it also has Jack Black.

That just means that they should at least attempt to be funny.

It's also more profitable to take the judge's bias, into account when crafting your entry to a contest like this.

                  Some more:

-I thought 'Bankrupt' was crap, especially the Little Girl Who wants you to 'take back America'.

-I thought 'Army of One' was quite good, because it really shows up the 'support our troops' rhetoric...but on the other hand does any American really believe that a Dem administration would restore that mil funding? They would rightly be accused of using the army as a welfare programme (moreso).

-'Wake Up' was ok but lacked punch. Concise factoids only win intellectual types.

-'In My Country' was clever...but I fear it might unintentionally give the message that there's only a rights problem for 'them foreign-looking types' and that Bush is good for Whites. Also the Dems need to quit being wishy-washy on the religion issue: either go after Bush for church-state seperation full-bore, or stop *****-footing around.

-Hood Robbin' must be the joke entry. Seriously this ad could have been used in any political campaign since Grog first ran for Big Chief.

-Imagine is a little sappy but probably the best.

-He Lied they Died: Anyone who is actually going to vote based on the war will immediately think: But at least we got rid of Saddam and are going to bring democracy...it needs to address the future and face up to the fact that many patriotic Americans don't care too much that Bush 'exaggerated' or 'misrepresented' for a 'good cause.'

seeker said it. people really dont care if bush lied if they support him anyway, just in the same way many people dont care about what clinton did because they supported him.

They don't rabidly hate Bush and might be turned off by some of the ads on that site.

As che said, negative adds work- a lot of that money Bush is raising will go towards a slew of extremely negatoive adds against the dems, and the dems will do the same towards Bush.

The only problem with these adds maybe in fact that they are not cynical enough. Attacking the enemy without being too harsh or over the line is key. These people are true believers as it were. For negative adds to work they really need to be made by souless operators who know all the right buttons for each specific constituency.

How many did you watch? Some of them I thought were insulting to the viewer, like Wake Up America. I think maybe there were thre or four I thought were good.
