I like Callahan better and better the more I hear about him. This might turn out all right.

North Carolina is a hell of a lot warmer than Nebraska. Even Spurrier knows his offense won't work in cold climates, which is why he said he'd never coach in any place farther north than D.C. Spurrier will be a good choice for Texas when they fire Mack Brown next year, but he never would've worked at Nebraska.
DUKE, man!! I don't care what the weather is like, it's still Duke!
And Spurrier doesn't want to coach any place more north than DC because he, personally, doesn't like the cold. It's got nothing to do with his offense not being able to work. Washington State in the winter ain't that warm of a place, but they can play some high passing football fine.
Now you're really talking crazy. I'd take Callahan over Nutt in a heartbeat.
You homer. Nutt is a much better coach than Callahan. Nebraska thought so too, because Nutt was higher on the list than ole' Bill. Nebraska just took the first guy that said yes, because everyone and their mothers were refusing the job.

We don't know that, actually. From the reports I've seen, Callahan contacted Nebraska after Zimmer turned down the job. He might not have even been on the list. We might've lucked out and got a guy Pederson didn't think he could get in the first place.

Seriously man, drive up to Nebraska this weekend and tell me if it's like Washington. It was -15 (not counting the wind chill) in Lincoln earlier this week, so hopefully it'll heat up, lest your Southern ass freeze to death.Last edited by Drake Tungsten; January 10, 2004, 01:43.KH FOR OWNER!

After watching the Raiders this year, I don't know why ANYONE would give Callahan a head coaching job anywhere. His players basically led a mutiny against him and that's the new head coach at Nebraska?
And if anyone can run a high flying offense in the bitter cold, it's Spurrier. He may need a bubble around him, where it is 70 all the time (he dislikes the cold greatly), but he can do it.
And btw, I can't imagine Oklahoma is that much warmer... and I seem to remember a Spurrier type of offense being run there.
And Purdue with Drew Brees ran a throw early and throw often offense and it ain't warm up there! Oh, yeah, I almost forgot Provo, Utah, which is pretty chilly, but in the 80s and early 90s, you had Air Mormon lighting up the scoreboards.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

It's not his fault that he got stuck with the dumbest team in America...
At any rate, Alberts' article has some interesting thoughts on why what happened with the Raiders this year shouldn't be read taken as a sign that Callahan is a bad coach.

It is, being hundreds of miles to the south and all...

Jon Gruden never had any problems with it (he just had problems with the owner).

Oh, I didn't know you were going to change the subject.
Didn't they get the Rose Bowl?
And BYU has won 1 national championship. And it's damned cold in Provo.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Last season, Callahan didn't have any problems with them either. It's only when the old guys starting falling apart that they looked for a scapegoat. I loved how Gannon criticized the offensive scheme that helped him and the rest of the Raiders' offense lead the league the year before...
And it's funny that you bring up Gruden. He didn't exactly have a stellar season this year either; guess that makes him an "average" coach.
Oh, I didn't know you were going to change the subject.
I wasn't changing the subject. I was trying to point out that national championships are what are expected at Nebraska, not Rose Bowl appearances, and you aren't going to go undefeated playing in Nebraska with a Fun 'n' Gun like offense. The weather is going to bite you in the ass at least one game a year.KH FOR OWNER!

Yes, last season when he was coaching Gruden's team. A year later and everything falls apart when it is totally Callahan's team. It is INEXCUSABLE for a team that went to the Superbowl to finish with the 2nd worst record in the league the very next year (ie, worst record for a team that has been to the Superbowl the year before)... worse than ARIZONA!!
And it's funny that you bring up Gruden. He didn't exactly have a stellar season this year either; guess that makes him an "average" coach.
7-9 ain't a bad year. If he continues on that path, then yes, he's mediocre. But a 7-9 speed bump? Come on... every coach has had one of them.. not many have had 4-12 in a non-rebuilding year and survived long (at least as a head coach).

So then, back to my question... how is hiring a West Coast Offense guy going to be much better? They still rely primarily on the passing game.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

How was this year's team Callahan's? The man had no control over personnel decisions, which is one of the problems Alberts mentions. The thing he did control (offensive gameplans) were all his and the Raiders did excellent with them.

A passing game based on short passes, though. That should work all right, but a vertical passing game would never survive the wind we get on the Great Plains.KH FOR OWNER!

Every time I try to hate Trev Alberts' occasionally dumb ass, he always comes up with some nugget of wisdom like this that makes me love him all over again.
Nebraska fans are historically impatient and do not settle for mediocrity, and the connection between football and the identity of the entire state is what makes them special. They are also the most knowledgeable fans in college football
Something I prove on these boards everything single day! Preach on, Brother Alberts.Last edited by Drake Tungsten; January 9, 2004, 04:12.KH FOR OWNER!

...knows what it takes to be successful at the highest level. And don't put too much stock in that 4-12 record this year

Alberts is a moron. Most NFL coaches have little to no control over personnel decisions. That's why so many want the GM/coach role.
The thing he did control (offensive gameplans) were all his and the Raiders did excellent with them.
What? Having the 25th ranked offense in a league with 32 teams is 'excellent'?!
A passing game based on short passes, though. That should work all right, but a vertical passing game would never survive the wind we get on the Great Plains.
A passing game based on short passes probably also wouldn't survive if the wind is that great. Once again look at Willingham and the problems he is having at Notre Dame.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Oh, and Pellini just left Nebraska.. it just is looking worse for 'em (Hell, anti-Nebraska fans on sports boards I post on are licking their chops at this).“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.
