  • How did they know?

Smoking is a custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs, and in the black, stinking fume thereof nearest resembling the horrible Stygian smoke of the pit that is bottomless.
-James I of England, "A Counterblaste to Tobacco."

also, the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV (1623-1640) had similiar sentiments.

                Murad IV?

How willing are you to accept health and lifestyle advice from a man who drank himself to death before the age of 30?

We've known about the dangers of tobacco and coffee for over a hundred years(that I know of), in addition to the health benefits of eating more grains/veggies etc and limiting the amount of meat in one's diet.
