  • Sweet, Sweet Declassified Gov't Documents

The good ol' National Security Archive (a non-profit NGO) has been making a chronicle of our coddling of Saddam and his atrocities over these years from recently declassified US documents. Enjoy:

Not true. We don't love Stalin or Lenin or Mao.

Well we loved Stalin for a while. After all, there was a bigger enemy to go against and I see nothing wrong with backing Stalin in WW2 or Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war.

Are you saying the ends justify the means?

                  Of course.

                  That's my line, man

Over a million died and neither gov't was toppled by revolutionary forces for freedomtm. Tell me exactly how the ends justified the means...

Hell, the balance of power wasn't even maintained in the region, hence our little scuffle a couple years after the Iran-Iraq war ended.

I may have a problem with your ends, and visa versa.

It prevented Iran from speading an Islamic revolution, which it was threatening to do. Better to weaken Iran at that point... everyone in the ME at the point in time was scared ****less of them (which is why they all backed Iraq... even SA, who has those Wahabbist wackos running around).

The Iranian gov't was preferable to the Iraqi gov't IMO. I wouldn't be sad if the Ba'athists got their asses kicked at the time.

I wonder if the "it's okay to sell our souls to the devil" crowd would be so apologetic towards Saddam supporters if a US made chemical weapon kills a few thousand in New York or LA in the next few weeks...

I sure hope something like that doesn't happen to wake these dopes up.

The US govt prefered Iraq over Iran for economic reasons. It had nothing to do with which govt was more evil. It wasn't until Iraq attacked Kuwait that the US turned against Iraq.
