Around here, when I think of Christmas one of the first things that comes to mind is the turkeys in the Covered Market. The Covered Market has been around since 1773 (here's a link to the city council's propaganda page) and remains rather Dickensian. In the run up to Christmas (and Easter, too) the butchers hang turkeys and other animals outside their shops:
