The interesting thing is that there are so many different definitions. I have checked 'nationalism' in Oxford dictionary, two encyclopaedias (in English), two dictionaries in Croatian, and one dictionary web site (in English).
No two definitions were the same, and some were quite different. Add defintions of 'patriotism' and 'chauvinism' to the mix and confusion is what you get. That is why together with abortion, existance of God and gun control, 'nationalism' is one of those eternal topics and all because everybody has their own definition.Comment

it is what enables us (the people of the nation) deal with those who want to take advantage of us
like corporations (in modern times) or terrorists or dictators
