And what;s wrong with an ad like that? If there is free speech, then groups should be able to run whatever ads they want.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Eh. They can still do that, but without exemption as a "news organisation" (unless of course they get that exemption despite Kerry). Read the article.

This has been already answered. However the praising yells of some of your compatriots when bombs were falling to Bagdat still haven't.

Just because NRA has a TV channel doesn't mean anything. Most people who'd watch it be voting for them anyway.

Yeah, I agree. There's a lot of crap out there worse than an NRA station. Heck, if the Ku Klux Klan started a networks, that's their right, despite their abhorrent viewpoint. Free speech isn''t limited to happy, feely speech.

Edit: I love to hunt and fish, too. So, they'd probably have a lot of good hunting and fishing shows. Bring it on, I say

This kind of attempt to regulate free speech just because you don't like it, is really disturbing!

                Kerry
I don't like the NRA's politics, although I have no problems with guns. Gun control is using both hands, and all that.

This isn't really a "free speech" issue though - the NRA has a huge number of other communications outlets, but it is a corporate/political lobby looking for a loophole around campaign and lobbying rules that restrict every other campaign contributor and lobbyist.

This is an issue of being able to manipulate elections with completely unaccountable media access, and no possibility of a level playing field for all parties. If the NRA has unrestricted access, it's own channels, and unlimited funds beyond FEC accounting, it will be the only organization in the US with that privilege, and there is no effective counter with equal time or equal access rules.

We already have enough problems with obscene campaign costs and corporate/lobbyist whoring by our elected officials, so granting one PAC or lobbying organization this sort of exemption will undoubtedly lead to ALL well heeled lobbying organizations doing the same thing. Being able to saturate the media with false or misleading last minute ad campaigns, without any restriction, and with public figure immunity from defamation is a great advance for democracy, don't you think?

What these people have to say sucks, but they still have the right to say it. If those who disagree wish to resort to back-handed tactics to suppress them, then it is a bad day for liberty.

sure, they can go out in public and march and say whatever they want... but purchasing PUBLIC AIRWAVEs that are REGULATED BY THE GOVERNMENT is not a guaranteed right in the US Constitution. And as MtG basically said, it's in the public's interest to not let such special interest groups pollute the airwaves with their propaganda.

                            The thread title is misleading:

The Massachusetts senator sent Federal Election Commission (search) Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub a letter Tuesday asking the commission to block any attempt by the NRA to get a media exemption to campaign finance rules.

He isn't banning an NRA channel, he just does not wish for them to get an exemption to the rules. I mean, would you really want an ACLU channel (knowing your political persuasion?)

                            - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
