  • Happy Independence Day, Finland

1919 was the day of independence, and today we again celebrate our independence. After troublesome years and difficult start, the country it still independent and going strong.

I'd like to make my opportunity and thank all the veterans who secured and kept our independence in the dark months of danger. Without them, we wouldn't have our own country to celebrate, and we likes our freedom very much.

Also I'd like to take this opportunity to make it official that I love this country even though I say bad things often.. it's the commie leaders I don't like.

Clarification to Pekka's post: independence was declared in 1917. First independence day was celebrated in 1919.

                Happy independence day!

Pekka, I suppose you weren't drafted to join the Presidental independence party this year either?

As I'm 1/8 Finn, have lived 2 years in Finland (same town as Pekka), work for a Finnish corporation with the office 50 meters from the Presidental Palace, travel to Finland about 10 times per year and last but not least had an uncle who volonteered in the Winter War, I say:

                  Happy independence Day!!!!!

As a Latvian-Canadian, I offer my most sincere congratulations to Finland on their lucky escape from the Soviet maw.

Yet again I remained uninvited to the Castle Ball or whatever the official translation is

What about all my hard work in improving the Finland image in Apolyton?

                          It bore fruit.

Almost nobody nowadays wrongly thinks that Finland was a German ally in WW II, now we all know it had just been cobelligerent.

                            Suomi-Finland:

I thought you became independent in 1917 because of the Russian revolution? So the "official" independence wasn't until after the civil war?

Jeltz is correct, we became independent 1917.. 1919 was the first time it was celebrated.
