  • DRoseDARs in Austin, Texas on New Year's and thereabouts...

I'm going to the American Institute of Architecture Students' yearly Forum event, hosted this year in Austin, Texas from either December 27th or 28th through till January 1st or 2nd (airline tickets not yet set, though some already reserved waiting for final decision).

Besides boiling the water in Texas before it's safe to drink, what other cautionary tips do ya'll have for me?

I guessed that would be the first reaction I'd get.

first, go to magnolia cafe. sixth street is a lot of fun, too. there's a shot bar that's pretty good. shakespeare's is a lot of fun, too. there's a bar that's got this monkey decorum that i almost got laid in, too.

I'm going with 2 classmates: Pam (in her 40's) and Catherine (in her late 30's). I don't mind bars all that much, though I don't drink. Cathy drinks occassionally and I don't know if Pam does (they're both 1st year students in the program at TMCC, I'm 2nd year). Mostly I'm looking for daytime stuff to do.

Hmm, Cathy and I should be able to go to that. We fly into Austin at 1:20pm the 27th. We leave at the asscrack of dawn on the 1st and Pam heads off to see her family in Houston the next day.

well, if you were going in the summer, this would be a lot easier

Austin has a million incredible restraunts...
                    Italian: Carraba's or Carmelo's
Mexican: Guero's Taco Bar or Las Manitas Avenue Cafe
Sushi: Kenichi <-- go if you get a chance, this place is it, you may even see some celebs if you care. be dressed to impress though
Also noteworthy: Threadgills (home cookin) Salt lick BBQ, and if you get a chance to go to lakeway, check out The Oasis or The Iguana Grill...both have incredible views of Lake Travis...

                    Other ideas:
Umlauf sculture gardens if you like that kind of thing
Ether's Follies has comedy shows, and it is Hilarious

that's about all i can think of at the moment, ask floyd

This kinda sucks because originally the three of us were going to drive down to Houston a few days beforehand, then attend Forum from the 29th-2nd, then back to Houston for a few more days and drive back to Reno...but naturally money was the deciding factor. I would have enjoyed seeing the Space Center and the Gulf de Mexico, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Next year, Forum is being hosted in New Orleans.

so are the iguana and oasis, but worth the drive Don't worry drose, you'll like austin. It is such a beautiful city, it's hard not to love it. Also, check out the arboritum if you get a chance. Some good shops there if you are so inclined.

Is it green, Kaak? Reno's got plenty of dry, ugly desert. Cold in winter, too. Though, the Sierra Nevadas are absolutely wonderful. Really looking forward to some warm weather.
