  • Speed limits are stupid

Wait people! Dont flame me yet!

What I mean by speed limits being stupid is that we dont use them properly imo. Speed limits are a must and because humans are so stupid, we need them.

So, I think that having a fixed speed limit on higways is stupid and doesn't take anything into consideration.
How come, in Canada, we have a speed limit of minimu 60kmh and a max of 100kmh on 3 to 5 lane highways that all go in the same direction with really mild curves and on single laned country roads that go up and down, right and left and where a tractor may be riding at 15kmh on the other side of a hill, the speed limit is 90kmh?!?! That doesn't make sense imo.
So it should be as follows. Speed limits in cities and suburbs stay the same. 30kmh in a school zone and 50 or 60 on boulevards. But on highways it should be according to traffic. No signs needed.
All we need is cop checking traffic. If the traffic is going at 60kmh on a highway and that a stupid sob is going at 85kmh, he deserves a ticket. Samething if we reverse it. If the traffic is going at 110, like usual, and some guy is driving at 65, give him a ticket too!! That guy is as much, if not more dangerous than the guy thats speeding.
How can a difference between 60 and 100 be safe on a highway? I say if everyone is driving at 130 and a guy drives at 80 or 150, he deserves a ticket.
Stats show that we, in north america, have more accidents than in Germany where they have no speed limits for the simple fact that people dont fall asleep at the wheel because they are more concentrated when driving fast.
    It's all about driving responsibly.

    What do you all think?

Germany didn't use to have speed limits. You could step on the accelerator as much as you wanted.... *sigh*

wtf is a damn km... USE MPH YOU DAMN FRENCHIES!

Some speed limits are stupid... but, speeding tickets is big business in the US. They won't change anything that disrupts a massive revenue maker like speeding tickets.
To us, it is the BEAST.

While travelling through Germany we've met a crazy dutch guy with his girlfriend. They were on a motoricle and they told as they went with 200 km/hour (a very high speed) They aknwoledged that even if a small pebble was to be found on their way they'd propably go to meet St Peter but they just laughed it off antway.

            crazy guys completely

Since I'm reading Fahrenheit 451, I can't help but think of the part where it mentions how billboards are 200 feet long because the cars go by so fast that they wouldn't see them otherwise.

No.....well yea but still, this thread has nothing to do with it, I got my tickets on suburb roads and I think speed limits should'nt change there.

                  Please, dont threadjack this.

I usually ignore speed limits on the highways and interstates and instead base my speed on what traffic is doing and what my radar detector tells me.

Y'know, there'd be so many fewer problems on our roads if drivers were properly educated on the two-lane system and other logical systems of driving, rather than just being told how to use a turn signal (which they're bad at regardless) and making sure they're not about to be hit.

(The two lane system is the system in which cars in a left lane are to be passing cars in the right lane, in order to keep traffic movement fluid, speed limits be damned.)

Hm. Yes, that must be the sole reason; it has nothing to do with the fact that there are many more people driving in North America than in Germany.

Unfortunately, people seem to want to pass in 30 mile stretches.

... well, since you said please

Most speed limits are placed only so a cop has a legitimate reason to pull you over if they are having a bad day. Some say "Speed Limit", those aren't really enforced and you can drive per the conditions, those that say Maximum Speed Limit will always get you nailed.

I don't care either way. I drive fast, and get pulled over about once every 2 years... Works for me. Traffic school is fun.
