"The Pianist was good, but over the years I've seen many many films with the same basic plot."
I don't know, I thought that the plot was pretty distinctive - a man struggling to evade a fascist regime... holed up in an apartment...
The only other film I can think of like it is "Au Revoir Les Enfants" which is itself quite different in many respects.
My top ten of 2002:
#10 - Spider-Man
#9 - Minority Report
#8 - Chicago
#7 - 8 Women
#6 - Spirited Away

Dissident, my wife and I like to see at least one movie a week. We usually see the best of the new openings. That adds up to 52 movies a year, which is a lot.
I'm hearing Oscar buzz for Johnny Depp. I think he should at least be nominated.

Was Pirates of the Carribean that good? The trailers turned me off. I have no tolerance for movies that rely on horror shock to substitute for quality scripting, acting and etc., and I thought the ghost pirates plot was just a little too much. Maybe I'll catch sometime.
Depps performance in "Chocolat" was very good.
