  • U.N 'Strongly Deplores' Iran Nuclear Cover-Up

    By Louis Charbonneau

VIENNA, Austria (Reuters) - The United Nations (news - web sites) nuclear watchdog condemned Iran Wednesday over an 18-year cover-up of sensitive atomic research and said any future breach of nonproliferation obligations would not be tolerated.

The U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency stopped short of reporting Iran to the Security Council, which could have imposed sanctions. However, some countries think Tehran has more secrets and will eventually face the U.N.'s supreme body.

What I want to know is whether this is another "lie" and/or just how it must be Bush's fault.

IIRC, they aren't part of the NPT. Iran still is. Anyway we had economic sanctions on Pakistan until 2001 when it ceased to be in our interests to have them in place for obvious reasons.

Actually, I think we lifted those sanctions before that, except for some technology restrictions and military items. They were pretty half-hearted and short-lived.

this only matters to us because iran is not our friend.

Say what? US (along with other countries) pressure was one of things that convinced South Africa to give up its nuclear weapons. The US certainly didn't say it was ok.

Iran probably restarted the program once they were included no Dumbya's ht list. That's what North Korea did.

                            1. None of those were members of the NPT, so there was no legal basis for UN sanctions.
                            2. South Africa was years ago, and i dont believe they ever actually built a weapon, in any case.
                            3. Obviously the US has special concern about Iran because Iran supports terrorism.
                            A. Iran supports Hamas and Islamic Jihad in terrorist attacks against Israel
                            B. Iran supports Hezbollah, which among other things launched a terrorist attack in Buenos Aires that killed lots of innocent civilians some years ago, and has hijacked airplanes.
                            C. It seems clear that a good portion of the surviving leadership of Al Qaeeda is in Iran. Iran claims to be holding some AQ, but wont identify which ones or turn them over. The suspicion is that they are in fact working with AQ.

No, NK was working their program through the Clinton years.
