I agree with Ming's choices. Just realize that the USA today is a little more popular than the NYT or WSJ. And that the WSJ has more of a business slant. (I.e. they don't go in depth on general news. They do a lot of concentrates on front page and will sometimes have a single article covering a news issue, where a normal paper would have serveral.)

I would also differentiate between ed and op-ed opinions and the news stories. Editorials, you know will be slanted in a particular way. what is interesting is to see how the news is played. If you really want to do a control, you should go there and experience it and do some of your own reporting. That way, you can make a comparison to direct observation.
