Ahhhhh, hell. The Constitution is a guideline.
    It gets suspended on occasion.

Well, seeing as how the Bush admin has been harping on about gases and germs (despite the fact that they are pretty useless), I'd expect them to react more strongly to a gas/germ attack that killed a few dozen people than to a truck bombing that killed a few hundred.

that causes our population to question our own Constitution and to begin to militarize our country

I must have missed the part of history where the US was demilitarized.

what would be interesting is if someone brought a nuclear weapon right up to Capitol hill and let it off while congress was in session. that would really f up the US democratic system
Not really. It would get rid of all the power hungry, rights grabbing, pork barreling, over spending, special interest tools also known as today's politicians.

            che,

Dude, the minute the big C is suspended I'm swimming to the Bahamas.
Or come down to Texas with me and help me start a resistance movement. I'd be all for armed resistance if this were to happen.

            Slowwhand,

That's unconstitutional. The Constitution is NOT a "guideline", it is a firm and binding set of restrictions on the federal government, and, in some cases, on the states.

I wonder if we would be branded as traitors and charged with sedition DF.

Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious, or so said Oscar Wilde. I'd call it the last refuge for the tyrant.

If we don't have the Constitution to defend in a war, then what is the point?

I would thik that the charge is treason.

Treason-- engaging in war against the United States, or haboring and supporting an enemy of the United States during wartime.

Your quoting Oscar Wilde? That dude was a nut, get somebody better. Patriotism is simply proud loyalty, my friend.

Armed resistance against the country is treason, punishable by death, and I doubt a group of Texans with hunting rifles could take on the US military.

Besides, the big C will never be suspended and if it did the military wouldn't be for it, every soldier, marine, airman, and seaman take an oath when they enlist to uphold and defend the Consitution from all threats, foreign and domestic. Their oath is to defend Americans and America and by doing this they give their loyalty and their duty to defend the Constitution, I know I took the oath not to long ago.

I seriously doubt that's true. Soldiers are indoctrinated to follow orders, and besides, those who want to suspend the Constitution would find some trumped up "Constitutional" way to do so.

The only good thing about something like this--this was noted in the gay marriage thread as well--is that anyone who wants to suspend the C will be remembered as utter a55holes in the history books.

Unless we nuke ourselves to hell. At least the aliens will have some type of archeological data indicating men named Bush and Ashcroft are losers.

                            **** that.

If that happens, you will see Dissident take up arms against the U.S. goverment.

Nothing means more to me than the U.S. constitution.

I haven't read much of the thread.

Wouldn't the opposite be true as well? Isn't it likely that in the wake of a catastrophic WMD attack, that the nation would cherish the consitution and want to strengthen its democratic beliefs even more?
                                Yeah, Sep11 really did that

Patriotism is simply proud loyalty, my friend.
True, however it can quickly escelate into jingoism and fascism.

and I doubt a group of Texans with hunting rifles could take on the US military.
But you repeat yourself In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure if there was a significant civilian resistence movement after the suspension of the constiution and the current government was unwilling to reinstate it, then foreign countries would intervene.
