Who here likes indie music? Some of the most recognizable bands being At the Drive-In, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Cursive, etc... Some of my fav bands are Desaparecidos, Death Cab For Cutie, Cursive, At the Drive-In, The Postal Service, Pinback, Modest Mouse, and a lot of others. Who likes this sort of music? There's gotta be some of you out there that do. When I first heard a lot of the music I didn't like a lot of it since it takes time getting used to it. There isn't a whole lot of exposure for it. Once you start to listen to it more to understand the greatness of it you will truly love it. A lot of it (i.e. Death Cab, Postal Service) can be truly beautiful while other bands can be extremely unique (i.e. Cursive, At the Drive-In). Oh yes it's wonderful music with all sorts of variety.

Just to clear things up, independent bands and indie music are two completely different things. Indi

On the other hand, is it really so difficult simply to accept everything that one has been brought up on and that has gradually struck deep roots – what is considered truth in the circle of moreover, really comforts and elevates man? Is that more difficult than to strike new paths, fighting the habitual, experiencing the insecurity of independence and the frequent wavering of one’s feelings and even one’s conscience, proceeding often without any consolation, but ever with the eternal goal of the true, the beautiful, and the good? - F.N.

I dig Modest Mouse and Grandaddy, but a lot of indie music seems to be too cool to be any good. Quite unfortunate.

I like some indie - well, a lot of indie - but much of it is, as Felch said, too cool to be any good.

                      This is true indie.

Indie music? isn't that just short for independent music as in music produced by artists on record labels that market and distribute themselves?

No, that's music put out by the "indies". Indie music doesn't have to be released on an independent record company at all although I suppose when the term was originally applied the independence from big publishers was part of the perceived independence of the music form.

That said, the style is actively obscurationist and prides itself at being not just non-commercial but deeply counter-commercial, with bands prefering a fan base of 150 in-crowd ****ers in tiny, stupidly named clubs to one of millions.

Indie is basically the musical analogy of the upper-middle-class mindset at high school- a combination of a strong belief in one's own profundity and cleverness with a total lack of experience of the world. Also, there's the factor of "twee"- grown men and women yearning for a lost, pre-sexual childhood but coming across mostly as a disturbing and twisted parody of said time of life. Throw in a healthy helping of whininess, ridiculous pseudointellectualism, a smidgen of uncommitted irony and the colour brown and you've basically got what indie is about.

(In practice it involves young men in glasses playing acoustic guitars in a cloud of awful 90s production dross.)

I'm an indie music fan -- and, per Buck's hair-splitting, and indie band fan. This is the only scene where there's a decent chance of catching something new before it either disappears or is ruined. I judge each piece of music on its merit.

Death Cab for Cutie is good. Saw them in Austin @SXSW last spring.

                            Another cool group is Oxes.

                            I noticed that Stuie has/is a one-man band. He's got a couple tunes posted on acidplanet.com.

I would assume there are at least a couple more Poly members with bands...
