  • What was the first online game ever?

Im doing a project for cs101 (super duper intro class to cs.. like learning windows and msword ****) and my topic is online gaming. And I was wondering, what was the first game to have online multiplayer capability? Was it doom? I cant seem to recall an online game older than doom (since I first went online when I played doom )
    :-p

    Nethack?

Besides that, the earliest I can think of is Populous (from 1989 I think).

        1989? Pffff.

You could play games online via BBS before that, IIRC. I remember the text-based games where you'd run a country and buy troops and stuff, and you and your BBS fellows would launch attacks against other BBSes. What fun!

Probably chess was the first online game, with people posting their moves.

I'm too lazy to sift through this, but since I wasn't too lazy to go find it for you, you can do the rest:

something like that. Chess and text based games can be done anywhere communication is available (well text based would have to be speech based via phone..) so it doesnt really count.

                      doom preceeds all that.

Do you want games that can be played on a network, or ones that require a central server that runs all the time (e.g. MMORPG)

Well, if you are looking at games that can be played over the Internet, you're looking at something after 1991, when NSF turned over the control of Internet.
