  • Is it worth it win98 2nd edition?

Right I've got win98 (1st edition) on my PC. Is it worth it getting win98 SECOND edition? they're practically free so is it worth it from the point of view of getting to the trouble of doing it. some games have problems with the sound in my PC, and I was wondering if win98 2nd edition would be better for them.

    any ideas?

    thx

If you can update, it's better. If you have to reinstall think about it. What are your specs? If you have more than 300Mhz CPU and 128MB RAM, you can and probably should upgrade to WinXP. If you have less than that, it's time to buy a new PC.

i have an old machine 450mhz 98 mb but i dont want to go to winXP too many incompatibilities with old games.
so it would be better with win98 SE. I think win98 1st edition have a lot of problems however my only ones are with sound with some games (like BG)

              Yet she's a crap singer.

If you have less than 128MB RAM you can't have WinXp anyway. I personally have not experienced more incompatibilities with XP, in fact some DOS games became playable in the same machine after the upgrade. I had problems with sound in XP too (Might&Magic 6) but my sound card was legacy (ISA slot, not plug and play). When I installed XP in my new machine, I witnessed incompatibilities with previously playable games which I assume are due to the ATI Radeon graphics card. Of course now I can play 3D accelerated games,so who gives a ****?

This is the reason I run 98Se versus WINXP..non-compatibility with some of my favorites games, mostly with the saving aspect and loading aspect..Fat32 vs NTFS (IIRC)

At any rate...I am running a 2000+ Athlon and 512 RAM 128 Video and have limited problems with any of the new games.

                Peace

The incompatibility is going the be least of your problem on such a machine.
Do upgrade to SE though, much better.
BTW why not look for some good second hand hardware upgrade, you should see what some kids think is old and want to get rid of.

You can still use Fat32 with winXp if you are upgrading.

I´s been a while ago, but I remember the second edition was more than just slightly better. later I even prefered it to WinME.

Yes, Win98SE is best thing next to WinXP. Win2000 and WinME are crap.

Oh, btw, if you ever go to XP, get the professional edition, it's much better than home edition.

Yes but the problem lies in when you go to load a saved game of Call To Power and it says "No Scenario Found" something to do with the file path and the fact that CTP doesnt support WINXP..
L-O-N-G Drawn out reasoning, but also If you have XP in an MP game it is near impossible to join another game..

With p8 no such problems exist..thank goodnes!
