Don't go there with those ancient currency things, it confuses me We are metric, and have been metric longer than I have been around. Just remember, our currency works the same as the US stuff, but is more valuable

Ah, I didnt know that. Its been a long time since I lived there.

But you dont call 5 pence a shilling do you? 5 pence is like 5 cents i.e. nothing. A shilling seems like a lot of money to me. I guess it dates me I'll ask my mum what she thinks (if I ever talk to her again).

I just remembered guineas (the spelling might be wrong) which were 20 shillings instead of 16 = pound.

Now there's a currency system for you. It's no wonder we ruled the world, nobody else could understand the money or the weights.

A half penny was called a halfpenny. It was pronounced hape-knee. I can just remember them being in circulation, but I was about 3 or 4 when they got rid of them.

I used to, until they finally took the old shilling pieces out of circulation about 10 years ago. (The new 5 and 10 pence pieces being the same size and weight as the old shilling and two shilling pieces.)

                        I miss the old money

                        Complete table needed?

                        2 farthings = 1 half-penny "hayp'nee"
                        2 half-pence = 1 penny
                        3 pence = 1 threepence "thruppenny bit"
                        2 threepences = sixpence
                        2 sixpences = 1 shilling "bob"
                        5 shillings = 1 half-crown
                        4 half-crowns = 1 pound (quid)

Jamski is correct, except he forgot:

                          10 shillings = 1 crown
                          21 shillings = 1 guinea

the slang for a 10 shilling note (now worth 50p) was 'ten bob note' so surely a bob is a shilling?
