Lawyer Gets Rapped for Singing Bob Marley Tune

MONTREAL (Reuters) - The lawyer for a man convicted of shooting and killing a policeman apologized on Monday for singing the Bob Marley hit "I Shot The Sheriff" as he was leaving the courtroom.

Despite the apology, the Quebec Law Society has opened an disciplinary investigation against defense lawyer Christian Gauthier, while the Montreal police union is planning to make a formal complaint.

"I'm sincerely sorry to know today that family members (of the victim) and policemen heard me," Gauthier told Radio-Canada television.

"If I hurt them, if I added to their plight, I'm sincerely sorry. I didn't think about it, and if I had, I wouldn't have sang," he said.

Gauthier was leaving the courthouse during a break in the murder trial of his client, Stephane Boucher, last week when his rendition of "I Shot The Sheriff," a cut on Marley's 1973 album "Burnin,'" was heard by reporters and police.

"I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense," the lawyer sang while pacing a corridor.

"It's the story of my client," he replied when a journalist warned him that his performance had been caught on tape.

His client was later sentenced to 25 years in jail for shooting and killing policeman Benoit L'Ecuyer on a busy Montreal highway in February last year. Boucher said he killed the officer in defense after being shot at while trying to escape.

Disciplinary action against the lawyer could range from a fine to disbarment.

Is this funny? Offensive? Both, probably.

    Should he be disbarred? Nah..

I misread that, and was rather confused while reading the article, I was waiting for the punch line "and then he got raped"

              Well

I am a former Federal Law Enforcement Officer and my son is a current Deputy Sherriff/S.W.A.T. Team member for the Onslow County Sherriff's Department in North Carolina.

I find it in very poor and offensive taste.

Take it a step in a different direction. This man killed a person. HIS Lawyer should have the understanding that certain thoughts and actions are not proper, be it in a court room, in front of a camera or in the local watering hole.

Its a shame, but I would suspect this lawyer would have a much dimmer view if it was a member of HIS Family actually killed!

Disbarment? No..but certainly a stiff censorship would be within bounds of an acceptable set of disciplinary measures.

It amazes me how folks are so cold and insensitive when it comes to family members in the grieving process, of which a trial is part of "Moving Past" a situation!

              Peace

That's an intersting take on self-defense. The police were shooting at me, so I had to shoot back. Now, in some cases, like that of Chico Salazar, it's the case, but still. If you're committing a crime, I don't think self-defense applies. On the other hand, if a cop decides he's gonna execute you, shoot away.

He should definitely be fined. Or at least be given a warning.

Image if he did it, in a gloating manner, after his client got aquitted and the policeman's family heard it... Then, disbarment would be in order IMO.
