Take a guess who officially entered the verbal confrontation stage of the terrible twos around 8:00pm last Friday?
Sophie, get off the couch.
Huh?
I said, Get Off the Couch.
No!
Sophie, I'm not joking!
MINE! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! (as I'm grabbing her).
Repeat as needed, or 40 times a day, whichever is greater.
We have no idea where she got the "Huh?" thing, but it is more annoying than the "no's" - we expected blatant refusal, however we were completely unprepared for her acting deaf and dumb. Countermeasures are being swiftly drawn up though, with Mommy's glowering "You know what I said, Young Lady" proving effective in initial testing stages.
It's not "deaf and dumb" she just doesn't have the verbal skills yet to say "I think mommy and daddy are losing it, I hope it's not Alzheimers. They just don't have a clue how anything works around here. I hope I don't have to start changing their diapers before they stop having to change mine."
Welcome to Sophie's world.

The son of a friend of mine has just turned 4, and he has suddenly developped a smart arse attitude that would make some people here proud.
On one occasion when his dad told him something, he looked at him, thinking deeply for a while, and said with all the aggrevated dignity of a tenured professor: "You know, I think mommy is right on this one."
You should have seen the young sir - I almost pissed my pants laughing.

Imho, whatever anybody does is fine as long as it doesn't hurt another. Ergo, "wanting" children is OK.
I wanted a child more than Laura did, but Laura is far gladder to have her than I am (and I am thrilled to have Sophie in my life, but for her mother the joy is something that I'll never be able to approach. Which is pretty cool.)

Wanting children is fine -- I just think that its also fine for people not to want them as long as those people take steps not to have them
Mrs Flubber and I wanted little Flub equally--
back to the saying no thing-- even pre-language they let you know what is or is not acceptable to them. At 6 months our little guycan be quite loud in letting us know what he does not like and its not possible to reason with a 6 month old

Next time, get a taperecorder with a microphone and say 'if you ever do this again, you put yourself through college, m'kay?', and when she does.. tape that moment.
When she is about that age, play that tape to her. With the money now on your hands, spend it on strippers and booze. Show no mercy.

The "intellectual" term would be dried nasal mucus.
And yeah, the "You know what I said" line is the best defense against this.
And once your little one enters the teenage years...."Huh?" "What?" "Whatever..." will probably be used more than any other words your teenager knows
It's actually a bit entertaining to watch mine go from doing whatever hes doing to a self-indueced confused/dumb state. It kind of looks like this:
