Sine you mentioned Gorki Park, i have to say that almost all of Martin Cruz Smith's books are great. But the whole Arkadi Renko series (Gorki Park, Polar Star, Red Square and Havana Bay) is his best work.
If you like Cruz Smith i'd recommend some of Scott Turow: Presumed Innocent & Pleading Guilty in particular. What?

Anyone else read Jack Whyte's pre-Arthurian series (it's a shot at the origins of Arthur)? Apparently it goes by a different name in the U.S. and outside:
A Dream of Eagles (Canada)
The Camulod Chronicles (U.S.)
I wouldn't call it "historical" fiction, because there really isn't much history to go on in that period. But I liked it, overall.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.
