No. There are, theoretically, emulators to run such apps, but they hardly work correctly, and are very slow.

Many games are rather ported to Linux. You can buy them, or sometimes download.

But, Linux doesn't run Windows apps.

You may have a Linux User Group in your town. Check the phone book, or walk into a computersy-looking place and ask around. Linux people are usually overjoyed when a new person says that they want to install Linux. Just be sure not to ask them a technical question if you haven't already done a Google search and checked out www.linuxdocs.org.

I am a student in a technological Uni with a large comp sci dept. I think I'll manage to find such people.

Question is, will I like to mingle with them?

            Word of advice:

By far, I've tried RedHat, Mandrake, Suse, and LindowsOS and I have to say that LindowsOS is the most useable and stable Linux that I've used to date. Although this Linux is not FREE ($49 + $49 more if you want Lindows Plus), it is well worth it and you shouldn't be disappointed with it.

"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

That's almost like Win XP home.

There's a reason why I am doing this. And the reason is to save money.

Also, if you're a gamer you should also check out WineX 3.1 from TransGaming Technologies.

Oh, and by the way, DON'T let Asher fool you into thinking that Linux is a bad choice.

It is when you've only got ten bucks and half a dog carcass left. Oh, and a computer.

I'm not going to fool him into thinking it's a bad choice. I'm definitely going to enjoy him trying it, then switching back like every other non-geek does.

He'll break when he gets fed up with the shoddy hardware support.
Or the vastly limited selection of software, and the software that is available is usually of quite poor quality.
Or perhaps he'll just get upset with having incompatible libraries and depedency errors.

Either way, it's fun to watch.

Why would he buy an OS with an extremely tiny selection of software, trying to emulate Windows...when he can buy Windows itself for the same price?

Quite a few games, most notable the Unreal Tournament series, are coming out for Linux. IIRC, there even is a Neverwinter Nights client available.

I never got the idea behind charging for a distro anyways.

If by "quite a few games", you mean a handful in the past year, then okay...
