  • National Holiday/School Questionaire.

Out of curiosity, could you write the name of your country and wether or not you're having school parades during your national holidays? School parades is where each school parades on the streets and the best student of each carries the flag.
    Something like that.

You can just write the name of your country and wether there is a school parade involving the flag during your national holidays. A simple yes or no would do. I'll explain when if I can get an article in english.

No. That would cause too much of a stir with people like Dissident and Che.

What does the Greek national Holiday celebrate?

          In France:
14th July celebrations display military force and fireworks. They are in the middle of school vacation, and no student takes part.

However, schools can provide a flag carrier on other occasion, in local celebrations (of 11 Nov. for example, the end of WW1). It's on a per school / per town basis AFAIK.

            Hi paiktis,

I have never seen anything of the sort. In fact, except for the gay pride festivals, I've never even heard of a parade of substantial size roaming the city. And honouring the best student in any way would be an extremely un-Danish thing to do for sure

              I live in the U.S.

We have parades for various things. Many aren't done by schools though.

                Ok. So
                US, Danemark is a no.

                Thank you for answering

Spiffor, so France is also no in national holidays. Could you elaborate a bit more about the local holidays? Do schools take part and there is a flag carrier? Have I understood it correctly?

The Greek national holidays are two:
28 October: Refusal to join the Axis and surrender to Italy. It is the "OXI" day. (pronounced "Ohi" which means "No" in Greek. That was the reply to Italy's utlimatum).
25 March: the beggining of struggle of liberation from the Ottoman Empire.

What about school parades on National holidays involving a flag in other countries?

There are several 'Republican' holidays (others come of catholic holidays), and the big one is 14 July, to celebrate the French Revolution, when the Bastille was taken.
Others are 8 May (end of WW2) and 11 November (End of WW1). All three have a state-sponsored celebration displaying troops on the Champs Elysées. But they have also local celebrations, which are managed by the city councils. These celebrations are similar from one town to another, but they can have some variation. One of these variation is the presence of pupils carrying flags and giving flowers to the local Memorial to the dead.

OK, I see. Do you know what are the criteria by which the pupils are chosen to carry the flag? Does it have anything to do with their performance in school? And do they need to be French citizens? ( = to have the French nationality). You propably don't know because if I understood correctly they must varry from place to place and are not as big as the main 14th July one.

And I'm still expecting answers from other countries

I know that we are the exception or amongst very few countries in Europe to do them. I'm looking to see what goes on in other countries (preferably with large numbers of immigrant children like every western European country). Allegendly Germany and Austria have school parades with flag carriers but I'm not sure.

I mean, sure, we have parades--Independence Day Parade would be the national holiday parade--but we don't have schoolgirls in tight shirts doing them.

(Come to think of it that's not a bad idea )

We have something similar on our national day 17th of May in Norway. Well, it's quite different actually and I'm to tired to describe it properly right now.
But I guess it's a little less formal than what you have in Greece (no uniforms and
the best student of each carries the flag.
                            would be unthinkable here.)

Gangerolf thanks for your answer So you don't have school parades involing the flag, right? I'm particularly interested in the later. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So we have no for: US, Denmark, Norway, France (with some exceptions).

                              Waiting for more answers, thanks
