Oh, and something everyone can do to make it go faster for everyone: Clean up your shared files. Don't share a file that has thousands of sources when you have one that only has a dozen sources, you can also rearange the priority of certain files. If you want to 'power-share' a file that you're downloading and help it get finished, move everything you of your shared file for a while and all of your bandwidth go towards the files you're working on, which will help speed up the download for everyone - the more people you give your parts of the file to, the more people will be downloading parts you don't have, and the more sources you'll eventually have.

I've had my emule on for 12 hours now...no sign of speeding up. Steady 13-14 kbps up and 1.8-3.0 kbps down...whats wrong

      STATS
Upload capacity 39 KBps, limited to 14 - Download capacity 10 Mbps, limited to 300 KBps

Sharing 1301 files, with total size of 40.48 GB shared.

Cumulative UL: DL 39.80 GB, 46.77 GB

I've only had Emule for 2.5 months

If you go for big files, you generally have to be patient on P2P software. I am 24/7 on WinMX for more than a week now, and there is some software I still haven't finished to download (god curses people who rip their CDs themselves, and result in having tons of different versions of the same software).

For big files, the secret is to have many things you want to download. At the beginning of the week, when I had many wishes, I had 40 kb/s quite often. Now that I only need two files, I rarely get 5 kb/s

I only download big files (hardly ever download anything smaller than 80 megs, usually it's 200+ mb) and I feel Kazaa is still the best program to use, because it's the only p2p program I've found so far that gives me download times exceeding 20 kb/s (usually around 100kb/s or so, but sometimes up to as much as 400).

And yes, I always have whatever p2p program(s) I'm using running permanently in the background and always download several files at once -- the only way to go...

Words of wisdom. If you have a permanent connection, that's the ticket

With Kazaa, I can't seem to get the high speeds that Locutus mentions on big files. Maybe 30kb/s, but not more than that normally.

BitTorrent is great. If you know where to look for the torrent shortcuts, that is. I don't still have many files downloaded from BT, but those that are, are awesome.

EMule is an additional pain in the butt when you're not running your comp 24/7. If you are, it's half decent, but if not...

Oh, and really, not all people want to wait for a week, even if they get several times during that.

My best speeds are: around 80 kb/s with Kazaa, but that's for a short period of time - 40kb/s best. Up to 700 kb/s with DC++, using local hubs. Only up to 20 kb/s with Emule, but few files in queue. And, up to 300 kb/s with BitTorrent from servers over the ocean.

Now, people download from me at no less than 100 kb/s at Kazaa and Emule, not to mention at least 600 kb/s on DC++, sometimes as much as 2 mb/s. Slackers.

At 20 kb/s your bandwidth is taken? I can usually handle 20 times that amount and still have some room to spare for other apps...

I thought Finland was ahead of most of Europe in ICT...
It is, in the cities. In a town of seven thousand, however, it costs 60 euros to have a 256/256 kbps DSL that doesn't even make it to 32 kB/s. The best I've seen eMule get to is 25 kB/s, often it just stays at 20.

I should be glad I have DSL, though, since many towns don't get even that, just ISDN or *shudder* 56K.

I could get a 1M/512k pipe in any bigger city for that money, easily. Luckily, I'll move to live in one when I go to university. In central Vaasa I could get a 8M/8M VDSL connection for something like 30 - 40 e/month. :|

How is that possible? What is your connection?

I have had eMule running almost 24/7 since April 1st, and my upload/download ratio is: 1.75:1
I always leaves it on, even though I've got nothing to download. Whenever I set a file to download, I usually have it within a day or two... though this doesn't work with rare files of course... and such files I also often download... Not all of them finish though
This space is empty... or is it?

UR - I get up to 10 mbit/sec for Latvian traffic, I'm connected via a high-speed LAN. Foreign traffic is usually between 500 and 700 kbit/sec - which translates to speeds of 80 KB/s and such when downloading.

Yes, I have the best connection in my backwards country and am proud of it.

Notice that Bit Torrent is excellent for new files, but you're in for a big disappointment if you're looking for older files.

To those who don't know: When you fire up bit torrent, you're only sharing one file, the very one you are downloading. You take very small bits of data from thousands other people, and you send very small bits of data to thousand other. There are a few servers which are dedicated to serving the entire file, but you are mostly taking your data from other users.

Once your download is complete and you close the window, you don't share the file anymore.

Such concept is great for recent files experiencing a hype, but it is bad if you're looking for obscure or old files.
