  • USA opens up economic war against Syria!

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House voted Wednesday to impose sanctions on Syria, tightening the economic and diplomatic squeeze on a nation the United States says is harboring terrorists and developing weapons of mass destruction.

"Diplomacy with the Syrian regime has failed miserably," said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Florida, chairwoman of the House International Relations Middle East subcommittee. "It is time to reinforce our words with concrete, tangible and punitive measures."

"Syria is two-faced, throwing a few small bones of information to American sources while continuing to aid the most violent terrorist groups in the Middle East," said Rep. Eliot Engel, D-New York, the bill's chief sponsor.

But House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said Syria "has evidently chosen to side with the terrorists in this war and it's time for their government to start feeling the consequences of their actions."

Congress, he said, "has a responsibility to make Syria understand the recklessness of its actions."

Capitol Hill is reaching the breaking point with Syria? Or is this going to be a Cold War type of thing?

My feeling is that Washington is going to do everything it can to have a war with Syria without actually invading.
We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln

Well gee, it must be true then, because the US is never wrong about that sort of thing.

The Syrians btw have this really annoying habit. Whenever Washington starts to scold them about weapons of mass destruction, they demand action against the one country in the Middle East that does have WMDs. Don't you hate people like that?

well, none, 'cause they were all iraqi. saddam funded them.

and now saddam's fled to syria, 'cause they're tight like that.

well, you're wrong, because there are very definite links between saddam and al qaida. besides, afghans aren't arabs.

Nope, they contributed two divisions to the Coalition against Iraq in Gulf War I. Just goes to show how much better Bush I dealt with the whole diplomatic front (gotta hand it to someone who can run a modern war on a profit).

Nah, I don't think that the USA will go to war against Syria. The only interest group I can see supporting USA war against Syria is the Lebanonese lobby, but I don't see them supporting war, either.

Israel has been willing for years to have discussions towards regional disarmament. Kinda hard when several major countries in the region (saudi, Iran) wont sit in the same room with Israeli reps.

And of course the reason for our concern about WMD's in a country like Syria is possible connections with terrorism. Remember when people were criticizing Bush for going after Iraq, when a country like Syria had much stronger ties with terrorism?
