I've seen this video on TV several times. It is supposedly from NASA files. Considering the video technology available at the onset of spaceflight, it's not surprising that it's of such horrible quality.

It was explained as ice particles interacting with tiny thrusters used to keep the shuttle on course. The problem with that explanation is how the objects could move in different directions.Comment

It appears as if something hit the ice particle. We see a flash just at the time the ice particle takes off. Note also that after the thrusters fire, another ice particle that was stationary begins to move away from the spacecraft, but not in the same trajectory as the thruster blast. This indicates that the thruster is angled relative to the axis of the spacecraft and explains why the "angles" are different between the particles and the thruster blast.Originally posted by Harry Seldon
