  • Apolyton: I need help for a class

Part I: I have to write an essay for my Politics of Latin America class and have come to something of an impasse when it comes to thinking of a topic. So I thought of placing myself in your hands in hopes that you people might be able to think of an interesting topic.

Part II: I also have to come up with a short presentation topic for my Political Economy of Southeast Asia class.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

The 1998 East Asian financial crisis is your best bet for that. It has been analyzed to death, so you should have no trouble finding enough info for a short presentation.

        Hmm...

What about the falling of democracy in Latin America and its relationship with the modern economical crisis, expecially Argentina and Venezuela?
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

If your class includes Mexico as part of Latin America, you could analyze the current miasma in Chiapas.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

That sounds interesting. Very interesting. Can you point me in the direction of some sources on the subject?

If you really want to cut down on your research, you could write about how the differing economic aid policies of the U.S. and IMF effected Latin America (Mexico and Brazil) and Southeast Asia in the late 90's. The American bailout of Mexico prior to the 1998 crisis and the efforts to keep Brazil from weakening afterward are covered in most texts on the East Asian financial crisis. Don't know if an IPE-based topic will work for a Latin American Politics class, however.

Well, I think you can find anything on the internet with a basic google search, or on some history based forum- I would concentrate my efforts on these points:

1- Why those democratic systems collapsed all together in the first place, and what prevented the other nations around to follow the same path
2- What was the rest of the world thinking
3- Relations of the dispotic govs with the US and Great Britain (Falklands-Malvines anyone?)
4- Desaparecidos: many american students attempting courses in Argentina disappeared as well, why?
5- Economical crisis in Venezuela (oil related) and Argentina (crap fiscal management related)- the role of corrupt politicians and world market in that

About.com seems a good source too

You can write about how the US installed dictators to suck up to corporations, but since you conservatives think it is a communist conspiracy...

                      off topic-

who are your profs? Is holly reynolds your prof for latin america? I seem to remember that as her field. I've heard she's decent as an instructor, but have some semi-interesting stories about her.
