I saw a transcript this weekend from an interview Limbaugh did after some celebrity pro-am golf tournament a few months ago.

He'd shot poorly, which he admitted, but said that problems with his game were entirely mental, not physical.

"There's nothing wrong with me!", he added.

    Oooops.....

He was buying black market prescription drugs, so who knows where they came from. You can buy oxycontin from Pakistan etc... and you can rest assured Rush wasn't trying to make sure the drugs he bought came straight from Pfizer. And we don't see terrorists from Colombia/Bolivia bombing us here so that was the government's attempt to link the situation in S America to Al Qaeda. And it is highly dis-ingenuous for US politicians to try and blame Americans who use cocaine for events in Colombia. The US has blackmailed Colombia into waging our drug war, so the results of that drug war lie at the doorstep of the politicians, not Americans who use cocaine.
That is true, but from what I heard he has getting his stuff from a pharmacy in Florida and the people who own it have already been arrested. I dont know too much other than that but I am sure we will all learn the details soon.

As for events in Colombia, even if the US was not getting involved there things would still be very bad. The drug cartell makes billions off the drug trade and buys off the government and causes a lot of problems on its own. The one sure way to stop the drug trade is too cut down on the demand. There is just way too much money involved, there will always be someone willing to take the risks that are needed to make that kind of money.

Abuse of legal drugs is different from use of illegal drugs in the "conservative" viewpoint. This is based on the idea that certain drugs are made illegal for the best reasons of health, addictiveness, etc.

The same substances can be processed into legal drugs (painkillers, anaesthetics, or other things) and thoroughly regulated. The derivative drugs are normally less powerful and less addictive than the illegal forms of heroin or cocaine or whatever.

Also, from the conservative viewpoint, being prescribed pain medication for a legitimate ailment and then becoming addicted is different from foolishly experimenting with powerful narcotics just for a thrill and becoming addicted.

Using a medication in normal doses but without prescription (as the case for the figures cited about Limbaugh—a little more than 2/day for 6 years) is very different from crushing the pills to inject them for a super-high. It's that kind of difference that separates the pitied victim from the "junkie."

It also appears that prescription drug "rings" are usually separate from groups and individuals who distribute illegal drugs. We don't see turf wars and drive-by shootings and other stereotyped activities of the illegal drug trade.
