Thanks to the "Movie Golden Retreiver" I now know (couldn't remember the title either):

One Crazy Summer (which the MGR gave 2 1/2 bones).

'Endangered Species'- an Alan Rudolph film with black helicopters, exsanguination, cattle mutilation and toxins liquefying flesh. And a government conspiracy. It stars Robert Urich, Peter Coyote, Jo Beth Williams, Gailard Sartain and is nothing like Rudolph's other films.

'Race With the Devil'- Loretta Swit, Peter Fonda and Warren Oates as American vacationers fleeing Satanic cultists, in their mobile holiday home.

'Bring it On'- I've never seen the point of cheerleading (still don't) but I derived mucho enjoyment from this exploration of a peculiar American institution.

'Spirit fingers! Spirit fingers! These are spirit fingers!!!!'

Oh and many others 'Adalen 31', 'The Baker's Bread', 'The World of Ake', 'Death in a French Garden', '10 Rillington Place', 'Cromwell' (Richard Harris completely miscast as Cromwell, but Alec Guinness perfect as Charles I), 'The Deadly Affair' 'Day of the Jackal' (Edward Fox chilling as amoral assassin for hire- compare and contrast with lumpy Bruce Willis), 'Horror Hotel'....
Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

...patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone. Edith Cavell, 1915

You know what nobody's mentioned yet (actually, I always say that and then it turns out that somebody did mention it, so mea culpa if that's the case):

Night Shift - Michael Keaton and a reluctant Henry Winkler operate a brothel out of the city morgue, with Shelley Long as the Hooker With A Heart Of Gold? It's like a blueprint of how to make a great 2-star movie!

I certainly don't consider it mediocre. It's a fantastic movie, brilliant stuff.

My favorite mediocre movie is Road Trip. I've watched it like half a dozen times, for whatever reason. I still enjoy it.

Mediocre movies have a good quality about them, they're not trying too hard to be the best, and they're not too boring either, a lot of them are much more interesting than the really great ones. (altho, how do you define what is great? maybe mediocre movies are the great movies? or maybe great movies are/become mediocre?)

Rufus, when you mentioned Night Shift, I remembered one late night I was bored, watched that show and even though the movie was very basic, I was still happy to watch it.

Another good mediocre one is Taxi Driver

Grosse Pointe Blank (i like most John Cusack movies actually) and Hudson Hawk (although this one's considered more a stinker than a mediocre i think).

The Fifth Element doesn't count as mediocre, but was one of my favourites.
