Yes. He's one of those that went for military service over civil one or funking it all (as I did), and additionally to the compulsory 9 months of service (ridiculous, I know) he does an extra 5 months, including the possibility theat they force you to go abroad, as they just did with him.

Several of my year group are in military now, most of them will just do the basic service and then go into studies. Of those that do extra and maybe even officer's careers, I do not know how many are sent abroad, but considering Germany's commitment in NATO and UNO missions, the chance to becoem a hero is quite good. My brother for example did 6 montsh in Kosovo, a mission from which he returned with USD/EUR 20,000 , so don't say it's not a good job.

Some of us just received an email from Alex saying he'll fly towards Djibouti on sunday. At the shores of that place, he'll begin service on the German frigate of Lübeck. His jobs are mostly communication wise, so he learns morse code and all the technical stuff and all.

Djibuti is situated at the Horn of Africa BTW.

Azazel, I'll have you know that once we want it, that will be the place we start our attacks on Israel from.

You have no carrier missiles. And definitely not enough nuclear warheads to threaten Europe. Or even Germany.

And of course, this is as soon as the US loses patience with you guys.

from what i hear Djibouti's a pretty jumping place these days - lots of Americans there - and the locals are hoping to make big bucks out of that.

Too bad they couldnt arrange to have the Lubeck based out of Dar es Salaam, though.

"Horn of Africa to get added troops in hunt for terrorists

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is adding new combat power in the Horn of Africa to pursue international terrorists more aggressively, the senior U.S. commander in the region said yesterday.

Between 1,300 and 1,600 U.S. ground forces are at Camp Lemonier in Djibouti. They include infantry and special-operations forces from all the services. Helicopters and refueling aircraft are based there, but no fighters or bombers.

Marine Brig. Gen. Mastin Robeson said he added the option this week of bringing small numbers of Air Force, Navy or Marine fighter jets to Djibouti for short periods. Robeson said there has been "a pretty active flow" of terrorists into or through the Horn of Africa in the past four months. "We've definitely seen an increase not just in presence but in active transnational terrorist planning," he said. "
