  • Advice on new computor

well, i'm finally taking he big leap - buying a new compu! ole bessie is gasping her last and will soon be in "the home". she was one of the first pentium III's, and since gateways suck to install stuff, i am slack, and until now have been broke, i am currently still using her (as of sep 23). i'm gonna plunk out about $700-$800 to get a new cpu unit (got the peripherals). I live in the southeast us, by the way.

any advice? i want something reliable, internet friendly, and able to play civ3 conquest when it comes out (real good!) it needs to be easy to upgrade (me) and, well, thats the gist of it, i suppose.

ps: been away a while, hey to anyone who's interested - chris - you out there?

You probably need a new mobo (motherboard) since new CPUs won't fit in the old socket.

How much memory does the computer have? You can always use more.

For Civ3...I'm thinking you won't need anything really advanced (1.5 GHz Tops, probably) and maybe 512 MB Ram.

      Shouldn't cost you TOO much...

You might skimp on a processor. You might get a budget graphics card. But, my friend, the one thing that you are going to get the maximum you can: RAM! Get as much as your system will support. It's cheap compared to other components, and you'll be gald you did.

Wait until after October 26th. The p4 price will head straight down.

It might help us giving you advice if you list what components your current computer has. If you aren't using any of the old components in the new system, then just buying a CPU won't help much. If you are using some old components, we need to know so that the new bits you get will be compatible.

They got pushed back, December 2nd or so now.

Though next month the P4s are set to receive a hefty cut anyway (20%-30% or so).

                      Look for enthusiasts shops locally.

Where I am, a store called memoryexpress is selling an Athlon XP 2500+, with a heatsink/fan, with thermal compound, with a motherboard (with onboard LAN and audio), with a 6-in-1 flash card reader, for $214.95CDN, or $158US...
