  • Is Bush saying kill Arafat?

So a few days ago, an Isreali politician says that killing Arafat is an option cause he's got to go.

Now Bush Jr. steps in and says Arafat "has failed as a leader" and accused him of forcing the resignation of a prime minister who had worked for peace.

"Hopefully, at some point in time, a leadership of the Palestinian leadership will emerge which will then commit itself 100 per cent to fighting off terror," Mr. Bush said as he met at the presidential retreat with Jordan's King Abdullah II, a vital ally in the Middle East.

Is this a green light for the Isrealis to assasinate Arafat?

No. Bush has all along maintained Arafat needs to go. The US position is, however, he heeds to step aside or the Palestinian people need to replace him.

Given the fact that Powell said it is not "helpful" to expel him I draw the conclusion that the US gov doesn´t want that he gets killed

While many people truely believe that the Bush administration is stupid... Not even this administration is stupid enough to think that a dead Arafat would be better than a live one. The last thing anybody needs right now is for Arafat to become a martyr for the cause.

Yes, and also not to exile him.

No. Bush isn't that stupid. A dead Arafat, however attractive to those of us that hate terrorist ****ers, would not be a good thing. Bush's position has been clear that Arafat needs to go. But I'm sure Bush thinks the Pal's should elect a leader committed to the peace process, not one who wants to drive Israel into the sea and eat Israeli baby brains.

I think this is an area where Bush and I might agree.

Arafat doesn't look very healthy though. Perhaps he should watch his diet.

The guy's gotta die off sometime or another. Given this is the case, why even talk of killing him? It was extremely stupid for the Israelis to do.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

He's too skinny. He should eat a diet of only Twinkies and Yodels for a month.

If that doesn't kill him, nothing will.

Haven't they been saying the same thing about Fidel Castro for the last 30 years or so?

There was an interesting news article within the past week or two that said that Isreali forces were within a few hundred yards of capturing Arafat to either kill or exile him, but Bush administration officials stepped in with a strongly-worded message to the Isreali leaders demanding that they not take that step.

I disagree with almost everything Bush does, but he's been quite reasonable and even helpful at times in regard to the Isreali/Palestinian conflict.
