With his wife, June, gone, his will to live was broken. Most people go within two years of their mate dying.

Johnny Cash was a great artist who was true to his roots and true to himself. Though I'm not a country music fan, I saw him 3 times. I actually met him briefly once.

He had been in ill health for the past 2-3 years.

I think most people, including himself, knew that he was on the way out.

It's sad, but on the other hand, it is also fitting, that he went out at the absolute top of his game. I haven't been able to go anywhere without hearing his cover of "Hurt", which is a really great record and easily the best rock record of the year and is enjoyed by pretty much everyone I know.

        Nice one Johnny....

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

That sucks... what sucks even more is that I already thought he was dead.

                A Johnny Cash story.

I was at the Glastonbury festival he played, in the "oldie slot" on the main stage. He got a massive crowd- these were the days when anyone could jump the fence- it could have been 100,000 people. The warmth of the reception he got was brilliant. Everyone cheered, laughed at the funny songs and sang along with "Ring of fire".

His voice kept cracking up, though, and by the end of the concert he was struggling a bit. I assumed he had a sore throat or something. However a few days later I was listening to Andy Kershaw on the radio, and he'd accompanied Cash to the show.

It seems that Cash had no idea what Glastonbury was about. He'd been asleep on the drive to Pilton in a limo with blacked-out windows. He'd gone on stage expecting to play to maybe a few hundred old country fans. Instead he found himself looking at the biggest crowd he'd ever played to, and everyone was worshipping him.

Turns out the reason his voice was cracking was that he couldn't stop crying. Bye, Johnny. Missing you already.

You know, I used to think it was silly (or worse) when people would rush out and buy stuff just because the artist died. But now I'm off to the record store to find some Zevon and some Cash.

                  Go figure.

I like his cover of Personal Jesus better than Hurt.

He was so creative. The world is a better place for his presence.

                          That is beautiful.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Today is a sad day, not only for country music, but music in general. Johnny cash has contributed so much to almost every style of music. He might be dead, but the Man in Black's inflence on the music Industry will be heard for long long time.

I heard they're going to release a 5 CD box set of old bootleg material and new covers, among them "Imagine"
