I download music to make sure an album's worth buying. I'm sick of spending eighteen dollars on a CD (16.99 plus tax) only to find that there's only two good songs on an album. That's what scares record companies the most and why they don't release singles anymore, or at least like they used to. If I know a band is good, if I download a bunch of songs that are good, or if I have a burned copy that I really enjoy I buy the album. It's my way of showing support for a good band. I have no intention of being stuck with a Crash Test Dummies or Pearl Jam full length CD single again.
