I found out today that the qualifying for the World Cup 2006 starts this weekend with the first matches in the South-American qualifying tournament. So here is the first thread for the Apolyton World Cup 2006 qualifying predictions game. The rules:
1. Match results: you can predict the results for all World Cup 2006 qualifying matches. Predictions must be posted before the beginning of the match. In the knock-out matches, goals scored in extra time and penalty shoot-outs don't count. Predict the result after the regular 90 minutes. You will get one point for predicting the winner of the match or a draw and you will get one bonus point for predicting the exact score.
2. Qualifying countries: you can predict the 31 countries that will qualify for the final tournament (hosts Germany are already qualified). Predictions must be posted before the beginning of the first match in the continent. If there is a play-off with another continent the qualifying countries must be predicted before the first match in one of those two continents. You will get 2 points for correctly predicting a qualifying country.
In case you don't know how many countries qualify per continent, here are the numbers:
Europe: 13
Africa: 5
South-America: 4 or 5 (play-off with Oceania)
Asia: 4 or 5 (play-off with North-/Central-America)
North-/Central-America: 3 or 4 (play-off with Asia)
Oceania: 0 or 1 (play-off with South-America)
Qualifying countries from South-America and Oceania must be predicted before the start of South-American qualifying on 06-09-2003. Qualifying countries from Africa must be predicted before the start of African qualifying on 10-10-2003. The start dates for qualifying in other continents are not yet known.
Here are the matches for September:
Saturday, 06-09-2003 and Sunday, 07-09-2003:
Peru - Paraguay
Colombia - Brazil
Ecuador - Venezuela
Uruguay - Bolivia
Argentina - Chile
Tuesday, 09-09-2003 and Wednesday, 10-09-2003:
Paraguay - Uruguay
Brazil - Ecuador
Bolivia - Colombia
Venezuela - Argentina
Chile - Peru
I have found this site which has some more information about the qualifying process, such as the complete list of South-American qualifying matches and the matches for the first qualifying round in Africa. This information could be useful for your predictions. That site also has a page with World Cup results (including qualifying) from all past World Cups.
