  • Blaine's at it again

American magician David Blaine, dubbed "the modern day Houdini," is to be suspended in a glass box over the River Thames in London for more than six weeks without food.

The flamboyant, 30-year-old New Yorker, famed for spectacular stunts atop poles and frozen in ice, is to be hauled into solitary confinement on September 5 in what he called "the most extreme exercise in isolation and physical deprivation ever attempted."

Against the backdrop of London's Tower Bridge, he will spend 44 days suspended by a crane in his clear plexi-glass box "with no food, no communication and no distractions of any kind."

He will have one tube to give him water and another for urinating.

"We are all capable of infinitely more than we believe," Blaine said as details were released of his endurance test that will be carried live on British television.

This is the first time that Blaine, who rose to fame with his "street magic" displays in New York, has ever attempted a major stunt outside the United States.

He has endured being entombed in a block of ice for 61 hours, has been buried for a week and spent 35 hours standing on the top of an 80-foot pillar in midtown Manhattan.
Methinks this is a step too far.

This guy's a complete moron. Does he think this stuff impresses people?

I thought he was supposed to be a magician anyway. Sitting in a box for 6 weeks feeling hungry is a pretty lame form of magic.

Although obviously not very healthy, it's still quite possible for someone to survive 6 weeks without food as long as they have water. One imagines that poor starving people in Africa have to cope with that rather frequently. Where's the trick in what Blaine is doing? I'd like to see him get AIDS and have crazy revolutionaries shoot machine guns at him occasionally to really round out the starving black-guy image..

I think he has serious mental problems.

Self-harm as a means of seeking attention is rightly seen as a cause for great concern when it's done by poor little teenage girls with razorblades. However, when some celebrity 'magician' does it he's described as "flamboyent" and "spectacular".

          That's sick.

Sitting in a box for 6 weeks is hardly entertaining, either. I would rather see someone produce flowers from their sleeve or spontaneously combust, but a box is boring.

Will he be naked ? This way, seeing his body evolve under hunger will sure bring some entertainment

Although, no doubt some foreign wag will soon appear to say that if the English can spend 5 days watching cricket they should be able to find entertainment in spending 6 days watching a Yank piss into a tube.

If he can pull it off, my admiration for him will hit new heights. Needless to say, he's going to get killed (unless theres something in the water).

What if it gets really hot? It'll be like a greenhouse?!!

And even assuming this is all ok, a man has "other" needs and 6 weeks will be tough. For anyone thats tried 40 days and 40 nights, the only thing that keeps you going is stuff to do, which will be sorely lacking in a glass box!

If he needs protein to keep him going he could always eat his ejaculate. Sometime these things need to be done when you're in a survival situation.

Hmm, wouldn't his "wells" run dry after awhile though as he's only recycling the protein?
