  • Credit Card Legality Question

So I spent $213.99 on a new cellphone a few weeks ago, and it just showed up on my credit card bill...they credited my account for $213.99...so they paid me $213.99 to buy a $213.99 phone.

Would I be in legal trouble if I didn't tell anyone about that? Would they likely catch it anyway?

You would be in no trouble that I know of, other than with yourself.

They will likely catch it. What they do when they do depends on them.

The real kicker is my dad already "paid me back" for the phone, gave me a $213.99 cheque...

So I'd get a new phone, and 427.98 out of it...

If I am feeling particularly naughty...

Usually when they make a mistake, it is okay if you do not alert them, no?

            And doesn't a new 200gb hard drive cost $210?

                Okay, I was being responsible.

I called MasterCard: They told me to call Telus, the problem is on their end.
So I call Telus: They tell me MasterCard, since their end balances and everything looks right.

So I've called both parties, both insist nothing is wrong.

So it looks like I just won $427.98 and a phone...

How many windows licences can you get for that?

Someone somewhere will eventually realize the mistake, and they will then debit your card appropriately. So I wouldn't spend the money and not expect to have to pay it back sometime in the near future.

Well, my dad says it's happened a few times to him, and they've never actually caught it.

Plus the manager of the store I bought it from said their books balanced, which is just damn odd -- the receipt they gave me clearly says "CREDIT" on it, so obviously it's not a MasterCard error either. The clerk at the store credited me instead of debited me, and they also say their end balances.

My dad also told me he's had things not show up on his credit card at all that should have.

Normally I would never agree with Boris, but this one time he is correct and you would be cheating your dad. He gave you the money to buy a phone, and you should tell him what happen.
