There's no point rushing around Europe in a 'if it's Tuesday, it must be San Marino' way- ultimately it won't give you value for money. You'll eventually be looking at a cathedral and thinking, 'yeah, tympanum, blah blah blah, clerestory...where's the john?' because you'll have seen so many.

The best thing you can do is think of things (places, paintings, landscapes) you have always wanted to see, and then try to do those- if you want to go back to Great Britain, you can also visit Ireland, take the Eurostar to France, or fly to the Netherlands or Belgium.

It would be very easy to see the Hague/den Haag, Paris, Bruxelles, London, Amsterdam, Bruges, within a relatively short space of time, but having said that, all those places are worth visiting again and again, because there are so many things to see in them.

Walking tours of Amsterdam and London are great things to do, because you get a much more immediate sense and feel for the history of the places.

Paris has so many museums and art galleries I could spend a year there happily soaking it all up- similarly Venice and Florence.

If you want ancient history, you could go to Carnac in Brittany, Avebury or Callanish or Newgrange in Great Britrain and Ireland- or go to Skara Brae. Or take a trip to Cornwall and see the Neolithic monuments in the Penwith peninsula, and the remains of the tin mining industry.

All it takes is planning- think of it as a military campaign, with enjoyment factored in.

I suggest you try and get a work permit for the holiday (assuming you need one ? and are staying for a fair old while), so that you can make it last longer by having supplementary income. Otherwise you'll find that you are having to return home after you pay the first taxi fair upon landing at Heathrow.

How about Finland? Take Flying Finn from London, Stansted to Helsinki or Ryanair from London, Stansted to Stockholm, Skavsta and from there to Tampere. Then you could actually meet a celebrity like me.

I can highly recommend spending 10 days or two weeks doing Budapest->Vienna->Prague (or the same in reverse). They're three very beautiful and very different cities and the journeys between them are only 3-5 hours by train. With a several small trips to do interesting things in the surrounding areas you could spend a very happy month just doing this, but two weeks will be plenty to experience these cities thoroughly and without rushing too much.
Also, although Vienna is very expensive both Prague and Budapest are very cheap so you shouldn't be spending more than you can afford.

If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.

My work will pay me my regular salary for the first three weeks and I'll have to save the money to cover the last week. I can't really extend the vacation much beyond a month because my work will be start to wonder if I've quit or something.

Like all good Americans do, I suppose.

Anyway, there has been a significant decrease in Americans coming to Europe.
Some say because of the expensive Euro.
Some say because of all those Americans who have become afraid to fly.
